KwaZulu-Natal communities in Impendle, Kokstad and Underberg have been severely hit by heavy snowfall on Tuesday, with some residents even left isolated and unable to communicate with the outside world.

In a statement released on Tuesday, KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said teams from the Department of Human Settlements would be deployed to assist communities affected by the extreme weather.

Duma was speaking after inspecting areas around Kokstad that experienced heavy snowfall.

“We wish to single out the Kokstad and Impendle municipalities, where communities have been exposed to severe freezing temperatures,” Duma said in the statement.

He said some homes had been completely blanketed by snow, leaving residents dealing with leaking houses.

“Those houses are leaking as they have been completely blanketed by the snow,” he said.

Duma said communities living below the Drakensberg Mountain in Impendle had been particularly badly affected.

He said heavy snow had weakened network and cellular signals in some areas, leaving residents unable to access emergency services or communicate with people outside their communities.

“There are many other communities in deep rural areas in Underberg, Kokstad and the border between KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape that have been severely affected by the snow,” Duma said.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane has dispatched a team to join the provincial department’s response efforts.

The fact that he’s busy with Iran is half the reason this is happening. Trump needs a win and probably reckons that he can quickly drive a tit-for-tat escalation over Greenland oil rights in time for the US midterm elections. It’s because right now he’s demonstrating major weakness in Iran. He looks weak, and that’s the one thing he can’t afford to be seen to be.

My point is that he obviously sees Greenland as a quick win. He has some basis for this opinion: Europe is currently hopelessly dependent on the USA for our security. We’re working on fixing that, but aside from a few exceptions, we’ve only been working on it for a few years; we haven’t spent decades preparing for a “what if the USA tries to fuck us?” scenario the way Iran has. The USA is busy with Iran, but we’re busy with Russia in a way that the USA simply isn’t. Right now the EU has Russia sniffing around its eastern border, and a sudden US rug-pull could be disastrous. Both sides are aware of that, which is why the EU has been trying de-escalation so far.

Trump, like Putin, will keep pushing for as long as he’s allowed - but the solution of “stand up to him” only works if we can follow through. You don’t pull a gun if you’re not willing to fire it. Acting tough now and then quickly capitulating later wouldn’t help, so the key question is “if we push back and Trump doesn’t back down, can we put our money where our mouth is? How far are we willing to go with this if it turns into brinksmanship?”. I honestly don’t know what the answer to that question is, but European strategists are better briefed on the logistics of the situation than I am, so hopefully they do, and react accordingly. I suspect that the European response will be subtle but firm, moving JUST ENOUGH resources into Greenland’s vicinity to let Trump know that if he DOES try something, it would get messy and wouldn’t be over quickly enough to give him the quick boost he’s looking for.

I think the main goal of the Maquis was not to evoke sympathy for them, but to put the main characters in interesting moral/ethical quandaries. Both TNG and DS9 did “forced relocation” episodes where the narrative focus was on the fact that there were no “right” answers, only “less wrong” ones.

Do Ukraine hunt civilians? I haven’t heard anything to that effect. In fact everything I have heard about Ukrainian strategy and logistics suggests to me that they’d consider that to be a waste of a drone. And Ukraine aren’t doing so well in this war that they’d consider themselves at liberty to waste precious drones on killing random individual Russian civilians.

You talk about historical class struggle as if nothing short of violence has ever worked, when this is demonstrably untrue and is generally only an argument used by those who haven’t the patience nor discipline to try anything else. I will reiterate: community organization is the only way forward, not vague suggestions of murder on anonymous forums to strangers. Even if violence were the answer, I wouldn’t follow any movement so undisciplined as to suggest it to strangers on an anonymous public forum and think that this made it somehow safe. The world needs more than Che Guevara t-shirts.

I wish to point out to you a very much better way – a more Christian and charitable way, which will give the lost man an opportunity of repenting. When a man takes a farm from which another has been evicted, you must shun him on the roadside when you meet him – you must shun him in the streets of the town – you must shun him in the shop – you must shun him on the fair green and in the market place, and even in the place of worship, by leaving him alone, by putting him in moral Coventry, by isolating him from the rest of the country, as if he were the leper of old – you must show him your detestation of the crime he committed.

That’s a lot of “we” and “our”. Are you a member of a community organization that’s working to peacefully improve things? Have you or someone you personally know been prosecuted as a terrorist for peaceful activism?

Before trying Michael Collins IRA stuff, you should at least attempt CS Parnell Land League stuff. Especially since you need a large percentage of the community to have already gotten organized before either form of action can hope to succeed, and that organization is easier to accomplish when you’re not asking people to kill people. How many of your neighbors are you on a first name basis with? If you can’t organize a community boycott then you could never hope to organize a revolution.
