It’s an interesting question that I think is highly subjective. Exclusivity could also play a part In your ring example. Was the grandmothers ring bespoke? If so, even a replica will still be “two” of a kind and I could see the sentimental attributes remaining. However if it was a mass produced item then the only special part was that it was hers, which the replica has lost.

I personally am OK with digitising photographs, and sometimes even pictures of items, because the memoroes they spark are most important to me, however a physical object definitely does have an extra kick if it’s special enough.

In the end sentiment is not very logical, and I think because of that we can never have a true answer.

But XTEINK is actively working to combat the flashing of open source software. It seems they had a spike in sales and interest due to their affordable hardware, but if they continue to lock aftermaket software out tech savvy people will be looking for different options.

I’m not OP, but here are the downsides I’m aware of:

• Poor reparability
• BT always active
• Codec support
• Latency
• Some need apps for full control and they can come with ads/tracking

For now, yes. Microsoft is already well on it’s way to a closed ecosystem where you’ll only be able to run signed software on “your” PC.

And with hardware prices being what they are, people aren’t going to be investing in PC gaming or new systems. The time is right to gouge and limit freedom.

And while those are cool and all, they have severe limitations due to the frequencies they use and can not scale past a hobbiest load.

If we want what we consider a “full featured” internet alternative, it will have to be built as a layer on top of the existing internet. Similar to the dark web, it’ll be sort of a grey web where tech savvy people convene and don’t cause enough fuss to be a target for crackdown. So long as encryption remains legal there are no major barriers. If we lose that it becomes much more difficult.

Modern medicine is amazing. The issue is how much time and effort it takes. As a computer guy I know how annoying it is to track down an intermittent issue. Imagining a doctor having to do that with an unreliable biological blob sounds impossible.

That’s why even in countries with socialised and easy access to medical care the chance of getting someone who has the time to actually dig deep into your issue is rare. It mostly just covers the basic and common problems.

AI and automations could bring us into a utopian era where there are 10x more doctors and educators, where all the underfunded and undervalued things that are important to society and our well being are fully explored, but it seems like the we are headed in the opposite direction.

No it’s not. Nothing is invincible. Doesn’t matter how much armour you put on a helicopter or a jet, there will be weak spots (rotors, intakes, etc).

Loosing a single helicopter in a fluke is not a bad look. If it happens frequently that’s a different story.

Yes and no. There has been a HUGE jump in integrated graphics over the last five years. I’m guessing your Intel CPU is older and not one of the newer ones with Arc cores.

Integrated will never compete with a discrete GPU, but for indy and midrange titles you can now do without most of the time if your target is casual gaming (1080p and below, 60fps and under). The biggest issue is AMD and Intel don’t do a very good job of showing which CPU models actually come with good GPU architectures as they often package older ones on budget models.

Snapshots and the contextual information derived from them are saved and encrypted to your local hard drive. Recall does not share snapshots or associated data with Microsoft or third parties, nor is it shared between different Windows users on the same device. Windows will ask for your permission before saving snapshots. You are always in control of what apps and websites get saved in snapshots, and you can delete snapshots, pause or turn them off at any time. Any future options for the user to share data will require fully informed explicit action by the user.

Considering the thread we’re talking in, it’s up to you if you trust MS to implement this well, but they are not uploading the screenshots to the cloud.

Personally I think the idea of Recall is great if it works to help you and only you. The problem isn’t the idea, it’s the trust. If a reputable open source project or Linux distro made a feature like this I think it would be cool, because I know my privacy is going to be respected and the feature is designed solely to help me and nothing more. However, when MS suggests this I’m immediately cautious, skeptical, and concerned about how it could be used against me.

I’m still not seeing how this solves the issue. You either use Cloudflare or your reverse proxy as the auth, which is secure but then people can only use your Jellyfin server through a web browser, or you publish actual Jellyfin and use its auth, but now you rely on its poor security.

Are you saying you integrate fail to ban with Jellyfin’s auth? If so that’s alright, but won’t stop anyone from using an exploit, just brute force attacks. I’m still also not sure why the VPS is required at all.

I got really into ED for half a year or so when I got my VR headset. It made everything feel so immersive, and the fact there was no space legs at the time actually worked out well. I still have fond memories of the time I found a group of old timers doing a mining event and they all brought their huge ships, showed us the ropes, and shared the wealth.

After the engineering grind though I sort of lost interest. I remember doing an in game event, which was essentially "shuttle supplies from X to Y, N times. I took my headset off to be able to use my other monitor and decided to just leave it off because nothing complex was happening. That’s when I realized that I wasn’t in my ship moving cargo, I was sitting at a computer playing a “game” that is just mindlessly moving cargo. The VR immersion meant SO much to the thrill of it.

I was never a good enough pilot for full flight assist off combat, and the devs seemed hellbent on just making all gameplay based on endless loops with only the tiniest bit of lore to hold it together. I stopped when the space legs came out since it wasn’t VR compatible and left it there.

It’s really good to hear people like you are making the effort to onboard new players. I’m glad it still has a following because honestly, the bones of it were great and I had a lot of fun. If you don’t mind my asking, what keeps you engaged and playing it today?

Wait, Jellyfin doesn’t have per user watch lists? Forget making it externally available to other people, this is something I need within my own household. I haven’t installed Jellyfin yet, but I had not anticipated this feature being absent. How do you work around it?

It does. People often throw this out there as if it fits all situations, but it doesn’t. Plex is handling the proxying for you which is what makes it so easy.

A better comparison, if running your own reverse proxy was too complicated, would be to use something like Cloudflare Tunnels. However that’s still extra steps, they dont want you media streaming on their free plan, and you still have the issue of Jellyfin not being the most secure code that you really want to open up to the whole internet. That’s why a one size fits all answer is difficult.
