Best you can do is be aware it exists and keep a wall up, only lowering it on occasions where you might be able to help. The fact that you care at all shows you’re not a MAGA monster.
I’m so glad you got away from that. It’s hard to not completely succumb to misanthropy sometimes and stories like yours remind me that there’s some hope.
