Just pay the few dollars per year and have a stable and reputable domain.
Certainly for fediverse i’d want a stable domain, these are usually hard to migrate.Why not just pay $2/yr for a domain on Name Cheap? They have a dynamic DNS solution.
Because I am school student (16yr) from INDIA. Here u have to give record of each penny to parents and If say them that I just want a domain for self hosting my personal stuff I will not be able to say something else.
I was where you are too and 2$/month or even per year seemed crazy to me if I could get it for free
If you’re at home and want to point to your home IP, but it constantly changes, the easiest is Dynamic DNS.

If you have a stable IP, there also free top level domains .TK / .ML / .GA / .CF / .GQ over at https://www.freenom.com/ . Their frontend is down sometimes, but once you have a domain and are point it to an IP, you should be dandy.

Check https://whatismyipaddress.com/ to see your IP address once you’re connected to either network, but with a high likelihood, it’s almost certainly different IPs. In that case, Dynamic DNS is probably best.
But if you’re using your neighbor’s wifi, I doubt there’s a way for you to host stuff unless you have access to their routers, can open ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS), and forward them to your server. It’s best to use hardware you control (including the router).
Be careful OP that after first year you have to pay the ‘renew’ price, which is generally higher than ‘register’ price. A lot of cheap domain offers use that trick expecting users to become attached to their domains.

I don’t do anything special, I just have a really stupid domain name that no one else would want. I don’t use autopay so maybe that helps.

Don’t do this, this is a seriously bad idea on multiple fronts. Buy a domain that’s reasonably priced and you will be much better off. (gen.xyz is cheap)
What I have in my setup is a VPS that routes traffic into a separate network that has all my services in it. This way I don’t need to expose my home to the public Internet

In a normal domain/DNS scenario, you need to make sure your domain points to the correct IP. Most registrars have websites where you can manage which domain points to which domain in the DNS records.

Assuming that you mean that you are using the domain name to point to services which are at a residential, dynamic IP address, you will need to set up a Dynamic DNS service.

Not an expert, but AFAICT email self hosting is not considered a good idea, as the maintenance of an email server requires a lot of work. An alternative could be using Cloudflare for the DNS and set up email routing (for free).
