Thanks for bolding the most relevant text. The Guardian’s headline is confusing until you get to that part.
I had a marine mammal prof in college who was fiercely dull unless you got him talking about whale hunting techniques. He would get particularly animated when describing how a Sperm Whale click carries enough force at depth that it make luminescent squids “light up like ‘eat me’ signs.”
He also did a fun impression of a Grey Whale scooping mud off the sea floor. Which was mainly memorable because it was like watching Niles Crane pretend to be a backhoe.
Most of them. I’ve realized that I give up my hobbies after a while because what I want is to learn the topic, not do the thing. And once something has become second nature I’m no longer driven to pursue it. BUT I also have to have a goal/project for that new knowledge or I won’t be motivated to learn… because video games are fun and the internet is distracting.
I’m sure camcorders were the reason. But no, they were BetaMax.
I’m sure they also argue with randos about systemd and down vote any posts about any desktop environments other than the one that they use.
Japan just gave up the floppy (officially), but there will still be other legacy users.
Until VERY recently the US nuclear arsenal required 8" floppies. Disks that went out of favor in the early 70s because they can only spin for a few hours before they start to corrupt.
The one that most blew my mind was that my local Walmart only stopped selling blank BetaMax tapes in the mid 00’s. By the time the store was built they weren’t even selling movies on VHS anymore, but the blanks were still worthy of limited shelf space.

M.A.N.T.I.S. with a budget, no Fox involvement, and no invisible dinosaur finale.
The closest I come to chatting is asking github co-pilot to explain syntax when I’m learning a new language. I just needed to contribute a class library to an existing C# API, hadn’t done OOP in 15 years, and had never touched dotNet.
I get that urge time I use a helical staircase with a human (or larger) sized central air gap. I think it’s a niche form for High Place Phenomenon… maybe because I watched too much Batman (TAS) as a kid.
When I was degoogling a couple years ago I had a heck of a time choosing between protonmail and fastmail.
I went with the fastmail and, while I have no complaints, I’m starting to glance at greener grass.
Thanks!
And yeah, I’m prepared for 4 figures on this one. I mean, as prepared as I’m going to be.
Thank you for the tip. I will make sure they’re on my list.
All excellent advice, thank you very much! I like the idea of actually calling the companies, my introvert brain hadn’t come up with that.
I’m on the west coast of the US, BTW.
I could be wrong about the price being dependent on volume of data recovered, that’s was the impression I got from a lot of the company’s marketing sites.
Stash Tea is reasonably local to me. I drink their English Breakfast and the Cranberry Pomegranate.
I couldn’t really think of much to add, but I reworded it so the points aren’t so jumbled together.
In one of the games with my group we screwed up getting to a heist so badly that 2 of us ended up downed and the other 3 were facing prison. That’s when our bard decided to use Wish to try to jump us all to a timeline where our initial plan had worked. The DM let him do it and go back to playing the heist itself.
The DM also used it as an opportunity to reveal some lore, and as we transition to the new timeline we got to look in on some others where the BBEG was winning.
This was 2018ish and we still talk about it. Save scumming can be a lot of fun in the right context.
Banana cream pie.
The bakery we usually buy bread at has had banana cream tarts as one of their desserts of the month, and the sweets case has been a lot more tempting than usual the last several trips. I’m both relieved and bummed they’ll be gone tomorrow.
We taught linear algebra to talk real pretty.
