The rooms we had issues with were public rooms that were discoverable via Matrix, with a couple of links on the web to direct people to them. The links to the rooms still exist in the same places, but ever since converting them to XMPP links rather than Matrix ones the traffickers have disappeared. I couldn’t tell you if that’s because XMPP is less popular with that crowd or if the tools they’re using to discover and spam them don’t work on XMPP. Either way it was a welcome change.

In my experience XMPP is easy to set up, lighter on resources, and the clients tend to work well across multiple platforms. We have small private and public groups using it daily with zero complaints.
Matrix tends to be more involved in setting up, and our group ran into issues where some clients weren’t working as smoothly or reliably as we needed for a primary communication platform. We also had a huge problem with traffickers of all sorts joining our rooms to spam their telegram links or CSAM. That hasn’t been a problem after more than a year on XMPP.

All good stuff. KSE was best with Howard Jones imo.

Fast Car is a classic.

TIL music is niche.

Today is the day KNT was disabling services for accounts that haven’t migrated.

VPN wouldn’t cause it to flag you as a bot, that’s a profile setting you control yourself. @cypherpunks@lemmy.ml detailed how you can change it in comment below.

!tdTrX@lemmy.ml your account is (accidentally?) flagged as a bot so your posts won’t be seen by anyone who has disabled bot posts. You might want to check your account settings.

Maybe .world uses more aggressive rate limiting or their server just can’t keep up with all the users scrolling endlessly and requesting so many posts? If the problem is only on their instance it’s easy enough to export your profile and go to a different one.

They exist but they’re supposed to be labeled. There’s an account setting to mark an account as a bot. Anyone deploying them in good faith should be flagging them appropriately.

Finding/making friends on Lemmy is definitely possible. There are a handful of people I talk to outside of Lemmy every day that I originally met here a couple years ago.
I think it helps tremendously if you can find places to interact with others that are less combative than the news/politics/etc that can dominate the feeds here. If you have personal interests in music, movies, tv, or even just want to have casual conversations, there are plenty of communities for that here. Those places give everyone a chance to “break the ice” on a slightly more personal level that helps develop lasting friendships.
The info has been on their sidebar for years now.
