There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that uncontrolled dynamic pricing once valued a book 23 million dollars (+ 3.99 shipping)
36·10 hours agoIf you just put something else in the cart to bump it to 24 million, you would get free shipping.
Explains why it responds/opens so quickly. Tight coding.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hackers can remotely destroy hundreds of thousands of solar systems across Europe, researchers find
11·2 days agoAlready had one, why else do you think no one has contacted us yet? Wouldn’t you steer clear of this planet?
I have three Reolinks. One doorbell, and two of the cheaper wireless with a solar hookup. All three have the max SD memory card they’ll take. As with any product, you’ll get lots of variation, but so far all of them have done well enough for me.
Issues:
They aren’t the highest res (newer models are better)
We had to get a wireless extender to reach the farthest one, and there still can be some stutter for the higher bitrate
For one solar panel it took a year and some drop in charging to realize the first spot wasn’t the best for all seasons, but now they stay 100%
Caveat is that batteries and solar do have a lifetime, but going on 4-5 years now and no notice of difference yet
The app/client is okay, could be better, and doesn’t have the greatest support, but it works ok for my basic needs. I’ve heard you can use other ways to get the signal, but haven’t tried.
I’d buy them again. Can’t speak for the higher end ones if they’re worth the extra features.
I’ve tried it, but my mind keeps telling me I need to upgrade my plan.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that yesterday morning, Microsoft increased Office prices
12·10 days agoMS also has broken and depreciated a lot of Excel’s functionality, yet it’s still the standard. People just hate change, especially the ones that aren’t actually using the product directly.

5·10 days agoI agree but I just type calcu and that narrows it. Or if the calculator is a common thing to run, either a keyboard shortcut or taskbar.
Big Trolley propaganda. Note that they only show you the very near future path, and not what’s really ahead.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Examples of roles where actors from Star Trek give better performances than they did on Star Trek?
19·12 days agoAny of his roles are awesome, but I’d hold McCoy up there with the rest. I believed he was the doctor. Criticize the script for lines and actions, but Karl nailed the mannerisms. As he always does. He’s got a Gary Oldman ability to become something different every time.

13·22 days agoI remember seeing that air. What a opening. Seeing how bad Wolf 359 really was from the inside. Also, I think first time we see starships turn on a dime.

World News@lemmy.world•Iranian star Parastoo Ahmadi reportedly sentenced to 74 lashes for singing without hijab
902·22 days agoIt’s terrorism and not punishment. About sending a message to everyone else. Drawing out the abuse gives more visibility than a single incident. And they’ll turn around and say it’s in accordance to a loving god. Right.
Everyone forgets the cleric. Until they need healing.
I always preferred the support roles. Both healing and buffing as well as backing up the tanks with a backstab or two.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI and brain-computer interface allow speechless ALS patient to work a full-time job
5·26 days agoYes, screw the working part, but anything else they get from it that they want to pursue I’m all for it. And sure, if they want to do some sort of work, that’s fine, but they shouldn’t have to.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you call this type of scifi? Could you also recommend some fiction with this vibe?
2·28 days agoAs presented it is the more cheery side of cyberpunk. The others tend to creep in older tech tells (steam or other), and the ship doesn’t look very shiny and new, so there’s a taste of used there, even if it’s not very old, like Star Wars tech always feels, even in the brighter parts (like on Coruscant). Definitely AI source, a human artist would have put details like wear marks, debris on the ground, little things to give an age feel.
I’m actually working on figuring out my own scifi tech as background material for a novel, and AI is not create at coming up with things visually. I’ve hammered out the ideas in text, but now I’m trying to find ways like Blender to bring them to life to better see it.

Part of the loading process now. Sometimes I’ll open a video at work and be reminded how having adblocking isn’t a default thing.

It was joining Facebook long ago and adding people I knew that made me realize I’m not going to ever bother going to a reunion. I only had a few close friends in high school, and the rest… well, let’s just say it didn’t take long for me to block their constant postings about all sorts of junk topics. My mistake was seeing Facebook as a newer version of the BBS forums, but once I figured out it’s all about saying “look at me”, and not about actual discussion… not my thing.
