  • Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it differs in quite a lot of ways.

Probably, they didn’t use dkms to install their custom wifi driver. If that was the case, Debian and Ubuntu behave identically and the driver isn’t added if a newer updated kernel is installed.

Especially if you use Ubuntu’s 6-monthly releases.

If their driver was included in a user PPA, it’s gone after a Ubuntu release upgrade and the sources.list of the PPA is deleted.

  • It says it needs to refresh external IP but I only use it locally so I cant see why it would need this and I have location access allowed so it should know I am home.

The HA app on your smartphone needs to refresh its exernal ip address (not your pi). It still thinks it’s on mobile connection (or even is if your wifi coverage is odd) or at least in a different network than your pi running HA (vpn?).

For me, closing and re-opening the app works if I encounter that message.

As I understand, one point is that systemd contradicts with its completeness the Unix philosophy of KISS, small tools that serve only one specific task.
The other point is that the main developer, Lennart Poettering, is employed by “big tech”, now Microsoft (before: Red Hat) and thus has switched to the “evil site”.
