Depends heavily on the country. Most used phones in Sweden are sold at MSRP, sometimes even more expensive. Recycling and second hand is very popular, even clothes are more expensive than if you were buying new in stores. It’s just not worth it economically, it’s only worth it if you’re doing it for ideological or moral reasons (e.g. sustainability).

I’m waiting. Not only because I’d rather use Motorola over Google, but also because I want to wait and see how the EU ID apps will work on GrapheneOS. If it won’t work on GOS (which seems quite likely as of today), then I will ditch the phone as a social medium entirely and only use it for ID, banking apps and other proprietary garbage society forces upon me. I’d relegate my social life to a portable laptop or something, on which I have a far greater control of the software.

That’s true. On the other hand, the extension gains a much larger attack surface since it has access to a lot more data (every site you visit vs. only the site that serves the JS code). At the end of the day, people wouldn’t use your site if they didn’t trust your site, especially if they use it for privacy and integrity reasons, so for most users I think JS is the better option. I suppose there’s no reason you can’t offer both though.

Is their JS code open source? If so, I don’t see any real differences between an extension and JS code. Unless extensions have less privileges or something. The user will have to either trust the code or inspect it themselves regardless if it’s an extension or JS code.

Isn’t it easier to come up with a way to share the passphrase or key file for the encrypted photos in the case of your death? Don’t get me wrong though, there are many pros to unencrypted photos, but the con of having them leaked to the internet in case the server(s) are compromised weighs far heavier than the pros unfortunately. At least when it comes to hosting them on a VPS.

If that were true, TLS/HTTPS would count as E2EE. I don’t think your definition is correct, but I could of course be wrong. But yes, I want client side encryption.

At rest disk encryption is super easy to set up, but that’s different from E2EE. Key management and encryption should happen client side.

Sure, but as far as I can tell its E2EE implementation is subpar. There are ton of providers that offer NC hosting, including Hetzner, but my main concern is encryption. Do you have any experience with it?

I’ve been hesitant to use Syncthing since the whole drama a while ago, and I don’t trust the current maintainer (it screams AI slop in my opinion). There are some alternative frontends for Android on F-Droid but there is not a lot of information about them.

I’ve used Arch on and off since around 2006 or so. I’ve used most distributions, including Gentoo, and in recent years things like Debian and atomic Fedora. I’ve settled for NixOS now though and I don’t see it changing unless a better declarative OS/language comes along (Guix is a good contender with its Scheme).
