I did and I was pretty impressed. The way they modified the Gnome desktop with extensions is the way Gnome should’ve been in the first place. It’s actually usable.

Hahahahahahaha yeah! I bought my first distro too in 2000, and it was also Mandrake. Yeah I fucked up a few times but was quickly up and running. I had just started my operating systems class in college where they taught us Linux with Red Hat so I was able to pick up quickly. By the end of the semester I was helping the class along with the teacher lol.

My parent told me of a family they knew who lived on a farm in their village. All of them were outright monsters. There were only brothers in that family. No daughters. They had barn cats and when they had kittens, they’d crush their skulls in their hands for fun. They loved torturing animals. They were pysically big and they imposed themselves on everyone and everyone was scared shitless of these dudes. One ended up in jail for killing someone early on for some banal reason, and another became a Hell’s Angel motorcycle gang hitman essentially.

In a different kind of pure evil, I’ve always been affraid of Dennis in It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia. He really scares me. No joke. The character is a real psychopath. I’ve met a few people like this in real life. They were the rich successful types. They gave me the fucking creeps. Manipulative, controlling, always working to get what the want and always have the advantage to have power over others.

To be clear, my desktop works fine on Windows 11. But the general ratio of cool new features to egregious bullshit is low. I do not want to talk to my computer. I do not want to use OneDrive. I’m sure as hell not going to use Recall. I am tired of Windows trying to get me to use Edge, Edge trying to get me to use Bing, and everything trying to get me to use Copilot. I paid for an Office 365 subscription so I could edit Excel files. Then Office 365 turned into Microsoft 365 Copilot, and I tried to use it to open a Word document and it didn’t know how.

I installed it recently in a VM to check the latest release and the instalation process is not as user friendly as Mint.

For everything else though I guess you’re right. But Mint has more quality of life stuff.

I’m currently in Japan and visited Kyoto and the bamboo grove a few days ago. Tourists here are such shitheads. Because the Japanese yen is so low, traveling to Japan suddenly became very accessible and brought in all kinds of shitheads that have no idea what courtesy or basic human decency is.

Yeah Debian is stable, but it also doesn’t come with an easy to use app store or pre-installed codecs for multimedia.

The installation process isn’t exactly user friendly either. And if you plan to use BTRFS with Timeshift for easy snapshot creation, you have to do some pretty technical stuff.

And finally, there’s stable and stable. Linux Mint being Ubuntu based is already VERY stable, but you still get fairly recent packages. With Debian you have to wait much longer for the latest software.
