Its always compelling to play “evil” bingo. And I always find myself guessing too tame compared to reality.

I didn’t get that vibe from the parent comment. the reaction was to the motivations of the rich fatcats who aren’t happy with the obscene wealth they already have. Not American Exceptionalism.

A patent system that does not grant a patent beyond 10 years. So nobody can sit on their inventions forever and deny the public the benefits which they extract out of public money. A patent system that requires a proven product in the market place and not a concept of a product in somebody’s imagination, to prevent patent trolls from stifling real innovation. A patent system that requires the patent producer to share the secrets with the public if public funding was used to develop a patent in any form.
A copyright system that actually understands product boundaries and doesn’t exist as a nebuluous concept of “This name is associated with us hence it violates copyright”. A copyright system that doesn’t prevent fair use.
This cannot happen under capitalism as it exists. So i am not really digressing.

In door plumbing has a long history, so perhaps to be specific: the flushing toilet
If the foundations for innovation were already laid for humanity… Only thing capitalism invented was normalizing greed and preventing the majority of people from enjoying the fruits of advancement.
We never survived without cooperation. refrigeration, Microwave would never be invented in the capitalistic environment that has been festering to this point. At least you and I wouldn’t be allowed to enjoy it without paying rent for it.
Shall i give you examples where capitalism perverted an idea that works by distributing benefit into one that funnels said benefit to a few people? There are so many. Infact, not funneling the benefits is the rarer occurance. Insurance is a scam. AI is just theft of our own collective knowledge held hostage.
Remember, people still invented stuff before capitalism.

As a Software Engineer my list is only slightly longer and has these additional companies:
Oracle
Microsoft

if you remove money from the equation, would you do the same thing you’re doing right now?
Necessity is the mother of invention. Not money. Money is just the necessity RIGHT now because the leaders you elect are only interested in themselves just like you are. If people bothered to rise up above their base desires we can do more than say “toil all your life or die”.
Do you really feel like all the advancements of the past 200 or so years have made our daily lives easier?

yeah where’s that bullionaire/oligarch/CEO list?

Microsoft is no longer permitted on my PC

Steam, Visa, Mastercard are not U.S companies?

literature is boring, hearing crazy stories is more interesting ^That’s a joke please don’t downvote me too much^

thats a dishonest argument. One has a money assembly line straight to a billionaire’s house. The other’s assembly line that has a possibility to be used for public good.

it may not seem like it but… being offline is the best thing you can do to your mental health. No need to overwhelm your brain with stuff happening elsewhere when you already have to deal with stuff closer to home. Being aware is generally better than being ignorant but it shouldn’t disable your daily life.

its a paid platform where engagement (i.e bickering in the comments section) is near absent. And the content is allowed to address themes that make main stream media blush.

taking a guess but I already saw some other comments on another thread mention this: The chart boys in any corps will see Engagement == Profit. Thus they will tune their recommendations solely for that. And if you aren’t bothered about properly policing your video upload platform the end result is highly divisive content thats “not boring”.
Divisive content makes people angry so they engage in comments.
i used to be on reddit. And I used to get into “debates” that devolved into a slap fight and make me angry about the people who intentionally or unintentionally riled me up with outrageous (real or my own perception) opinions.
While lemmy also has slap fights, I feel like the lack of an “algorithm” tuned for engagement prevents continuous fueling of the fire, metaphorically speaking.
Sure yeah I could be wrong. If America scares them more than China it’s a major turning point because they are European.
What I initially got from their comment: They are more concerned about actually real threats in their life like Google, Meta, or Apple which are American and are probably what they are using at work and outside of work given they live in Europe. They are less concerned about china because they don’t use chinese phones daily or hangout in weChat (I hope).
Where I can of course be wrong about this: They are actually using Tiktok and don’t care about the possible spying. They could be using chinese tech and simply not know. main concern is if they are on some tech stack at work or their ISP has equipment from chinese companies known to phone home.

if you want an academic discussion about world war accelerating events you will have more luck pestering your local professor rather than demanding evidence from someone who isn’t intending to apply too much rigor on a lemmy post.
thats not what they said did they? they said they are more concerned about American companies harvesting their data as they live in Europe and don’t have as much affinity to China.
I know i sound like a doomer but…
maybe the bubble is about to burst and this is just panic diversification of assets? it sure is funny to attribute it to that.
