World News@lemmy.world•At least 5,000 people killed in protests in Iran, official saysEnglish
52·3 days agoKeep protesting for the people of Iran. Keep pressure on Western governments to act and support the Persian people. The Iranian people never wanted to live under a fundamentalist terror state.
Economic isolation against every individual official and commander killing their own people is the most important tool we have.
Keep the information channels open at all costs.

Technology@lemmy.world•ChatGPT Gave Teen Advice to Get Higher on Drugs Until He Died | FuturismEnglish
422·3 days agoJust to be clear, companies know that LLMs are categorically bad at giving life advice/ emotional guidance. They also know that personal decision making is the most common use of the software. They could easily have guardrails in place to prevent it from doing that.
They will never do that.
This is by design. They want people to develop pseudo-emotional bonds with the software, and to trust the judgment in matters of life guidance. In the next year or so, some LLM projects will become profitable for the first time as advertisers flock to the platforms. Injecting ads into conversations with a trusted confidant is the goal. Incluencing human behaviour is the goal.
By 2028, we will be reading about “ChatGPT told teen to drink Pepsi until she went into a sugar coma.”

Technology@lemmy.world•Study: At Least 15% of All Reddit Content is Corporate Trolls Trying to Manipulate Public OpinionEnglish
3·6 days agoThe headline also does not say the same thing that the post claims!
Headline: “15% of content” --> every 6th or 7th post or comment is a corporate troll
Article: “15% of subreddits contain” --> the vast majority of subreddits contain no troll content
Actual study: [file not found]
I also cannot find any Pew research study resembling the one described. The link is a 2017 report that doesn’t mention reddit.
I keep adding oils of varying viscosities but it doesn’t seem to help.
I can’t attest to any as I don’t use PDFs this way, but here are a few links:
All of these are self-hostable and FOSS. I’m not sure about NextCloud integration.
I think you may be thinking of LibreOffice

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•is it embarrassing to graduate college at 24?
5·14 days agoAnd a lot of people graduate at 30. Or 60. Life experience and more readiness than you would have had 2 years ago is not a drawback - it’s a benefit.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is self-hosting on personal computer practical?English
201·15 days agoYeah, it’s better if you can have the computer on all the time, but it only needs to be running when you access it.
I’m not that familiar with FreshRSS, but in general apps will only update at opening (not in the background) for most syncing operations. You may have to do more manual syncing than you would like.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which model of good and evil, if not somehow both, do you think is more accurate?
21·17 days agoTorah teaches that God created human beings with both good and evil impulses. Human beings uniquely have knowledge of our drives and impulses and can learn to master them. The same needs that drive us to consume can lead us to overconsume or do so unethically. Our animal drive for safety and security can also lead us to attack perceived threats.
According to this philosophy, evil comes from people misdirecting divinely given attributes.
The idea of good and evil as absolute “powers” independent of human choices is foreign to many philosophies and theologies.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there a secure video chat that does not require a phone number?
2·24 days agoThanks for the heads up. This may still be the best option for me, but it is good to stay ahead of these things.
There is something in the quoted Masto thread that suggests realtime video is inherently insecure? I have to be honest that I didn’t really follow it.
The info from SimpleX reads as though they are using crypto donations rather than more traceable cash, which mostly makes sense to me. The NFT tech that they describe is not for trading purposes, but to anonymously verify payments. It would be used to connect an account to a payment through zero or minimal knowledge. I don’t really understand the tech, so please let me know if I even understand what they are suggesting.
This is just for family chat, so total black box security is not a priority.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
7·26 days agoI do like living in the USA. There is generally a reliability and safety that I haven’t seen in many other places. There are big problems for sure, and being married to an immigrant is worrying at times. We absolutely have backup plans but so far we have not seriously considered leaving.

So the people killing women for partially uncovering their hair are the good guys?
The people murdering thousands of protestors are the good guys?
So the religious fundamentalists imposing doctrine at gunpoint are the good guys?
I think the people protesting for their lives and freedoms are the good guys, but that’s just me.
