Several tech YouTubers have talked about moving entirely to Jellyfin or similar, self-hosting their own movies and TV series from legally owned, ripped copies from their own DVD or Bluray collection.

It takes some work and time to rip, encode, and organize the files. But if you want to go this route, there has probably never been a better time. You can routinely purchase used DVDs and Bluray from thrift stores for a few bucks per disc… sometimes less. If I had a server and hard disk space I’d probably be going this route for media consumption.

Eventually the DVDs will go away entirely and then it will be impossible to create your own legal archival copies.

Not a Boomer, but did get an internship that eventually became a full time job this way, during the post-2008 recession.

I got laid off and wasn’t getting any solid leads from traditional application processes or the town “career center” so I made a list of businesses in walking distance of eachother that might need my services, printed a few dozen copies of my resume, and beat the streets. I just walked in and asked for a manager but settled for whoever would talk to me, gave my brief elevator pitch, left a resume and contact info. A few called me and one actually worked out.

It is very humbling but it can work.

The annoying part is how many mainstream tech companies have ham-fisted AI into every crevice of every product. It isn’t necessary and I’m not convinced it results in a “better search result” for 90% of the crap people throw into Google. Basic indexed searches are fine for most use cases.

If you build up your local community and supporting institutions, and commit to ignoring unjust laws, you can greatly minimize the degree to which anything at the federal level impacts you.

This involves a lot of self sufficiency and privacy efforts that many are resistent to because of the loss of convenience, but it is well worth it.

I enjoyed a lot of the game objectives… Automating the farm, going to the bottom of the mine and the desert thing, completing the community center, courting a spouse etc.

A lot of the grindy bits weren’t as fun, such as missing some season-specific cutscene or event and not having the exact right item, the feeling of needing to speed grow certain crops at the beginning of each season, etc.

Overall it was a chill and positive experience. The music is awesome, character interactions not too laborious. This game plays great on SteamDeck and with proper settings it sips battery. For a long flight, I would pair this title with stuff like Animal Well, Dead Cells, and Cave Blazers.

Trespasser was a vibe in some ways. The clean screen and unique control scheme was innovative at the time. Granted it doesn’t hold up very well now, but there were some cool concepts at least.

A lot of public school districts now provide laptops or Chromebooks to the students to use during class while doing… let’s say…minimal oversight at best.

So most of the same inappropriate garbage behaviors and distractions will just be offloaded from the personal phone to the school device.

They can do whatever they want, sure. What I will say is the moving goalposts for certain “undesirable” content is pretty ridiculous especially if you consider the history of YouTube. Several of the first partner channels and many of the oldest YT channels are gun channels. They were glad to exploit that community to build their platform, but will throw them under the bus at every turn if it can be used to virtue signal or pander to advertising partners.

And you can also not log into Google Maps. It still lets you use map and navigation etc. But it is denied any explicit methods of identifying you and is left with only probabilistic methods (i.e. you are searching from the same network and therefore same public IP as another device that is known to Google as being associated with your account).

Any competent person with $50 and access to a hardware store can build functional firearms. This didn’t start with 3D printers.

It is 100% legal in the US to build ones own firearms for personal use. Only a few states have put any additional requirements around it.

Building new full auto guns is already illegal without the proper federal licensure. It was already possible for motivated bad actors to ignore this law if they want, even before 3D printing became a moral panic.

There is already zero point to gun control. Can’t stop the signal.

There are one or two accounts on Lemmy who seem to show up in every privacy or graphene thread and shit-talk GOS.

I say if there is something wrong with GOS or the code itself, identify it and prove it. The founder may have been “problematic” or whatever, but it doesn’t sound like that person is even associated with the project anymore.

I have personally daily-driven GOS for a year. It has worked well for me. I use a lot of FOSS apps. I use some traditional Play Store apps and avoid logging into Google and I manage permissions closely. I’d say GOS gives you options. Maybe some people would like other customized degoogled OS better, and that is fine. Just… for the love of all that is sacred, don’t use vanilla Googled Android.

Not OP but the scenario described is say… A company and a specific manager gets sued for harassment. The plaintiff can be entitled to discovery related to the complaint, and that could now include the searchable screenshot database from the managers computer showing all the clear evidence that he harassed the plaintiff. Nightmare scenario for legal departments of companies.
