Yep. This is why politically advocating for privacy by default is so important, albeit its not going well lmao.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•You Should Stop Using Meta (Facebook) Products at All Costs
8·16 days agoOnly have messenger left. Considering doing another push to convince my stubborn friends to go on signal. Then I can finally be rid of meta

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How surrounded are you by opposing political views?
3·17 days agoGenerally surounded by socially liberal / left wing.
Exception is my dad who’s sort of fashy at times, which I do hate him for
My ex and I broke up for a few reasons.
First I think we couldnt handle conflict, in the sense of bringing it up even if it was needed.
Second, we lived far away. This one definitely effected it a lot, as its hard to not see them as a friend u meet up with occasionally.
Third, I came out as trans, so we both made the decision it was best to move on since my ex is straight.
Currently we are just friends, which is for the better.
noai duckduck go
I see what your saying, its just my friends have no interest in signal (tried a few times) so messenger is a compromise.
Oh yeah i just mean delete the app to make me stop looking at it. It was an addiction for me. Well, not facebook but instagram was.
There is an end to end encrypted feature, with a 6 digit pin to decrypt the keys I believe. a 6 digit pin isnt the most secure, but its better then nothing for typical conversations.
Annoyingly there is a feature that u can summarise texts with using AI, which ofc breaks privacy, but u can turn off message sharing (meaning you and the other person can no longer do that)
A few glaring alarm bells around privacy on messenger, but again, better then nothing.
The toxicity of instagram and the hollow content on facebook made me delete them. I still have messenger however, since convincing people to install signal is difficult, and also it is useful to communicate with new friends (considering the alternative is unencrypted sms)
But wow its so good to be off it

30·1 month agoMy god we’re in a dystopian hell. I feel so fucking sad for these people :(
At least now the AI wont distract them from their loneliness so hopefully they contront it.
Signal. Requires little technical knowledge, other then knowing about end to end encryption and why its important
I would like to use matrix since if anything, I think its cool. But noone I know would be remotely interested.
You can add your GPG keys to the thundermail client, and it just sits there locally on your computer encrypting/decrypting mail as needed. Another caveat/weakness with PGP/GPG is it relies on the sender to actually encrypt their email with your key. If they don’t, of course the email will sit there in plain text.
As others have said, tuta. Could also use PGP, but that doesn’t hide the sender/receiver only the content

2·2 months agoTbh I kiiind of do that with everyone. Well, not quite, I take what they say with a big grain of salt and just continue the conversation. A couple exceptions: they are experts in what they’re talking about. Or, its some personal experience
