return2ozma@lemmy.worldOPto World News@lemmy.world•International Labor Day 2025: Which countries observe a public holiday — Is the USA, UK, or Canada on the list?English81·2 months agoThe origins of International Labor Day are found in Chicago, where on May 1, 1886, workers called for a strike for an eight-hour workday.
On May 4, violence broke out in Haymarket Square when a bomb was thrown at police officers. The resulting gunfire resulted in several deaths, including six officers and a number of civilians.
This turning point stimulated trade unions and socialist federations across Europe to declare May 1 an international day of workers" solidarity, formally approved in 1889 at the Paris meeting of the Second International.
return2ozma@lemmy.worldto World News@lemmy.world•China retaliation on US farm goods hits soybeans, bolstering BrazilEnglish81·3 months agoThey won’t be able to downplay this at all either. People are going to find out exactly how many soybeans we export, how many soybeans China imports, and then add in the fact that we are the second highest exporter of it behind Brazil…who is a member of BRICS and trades with China easily. If they don’t manage to somehow reverse these tariffs…well, shit is gonna get real ugly for the farming industry.
This is less of a find out stage and more raging dumpster fire that was expected. Considering we pissed off every other country that might be willing to import them, the soybean farming industry is fucked.

It’s a memes channel. It’s not that serious.
