  • Whenever my colleague at the neighbouring desk left her laptop unlocked, I would go in, and create a new Word document saying ALWAYS LOCK YOUR LAPTOP in huge red font. She vowed she would eventually get back at me.

    I once took a screenshot of some random text in a Word document with “CONFIDENTIAL” as the background watermark and then I used that screenshot as my lock screen wallpaper. When I locked my laptop and left my desk, she clocked the content of my screen and thought it was finally her moment to get back at me, but… it wasn’t.

    Also, because of increased healthy lifestyle awareness, we are actually ageing slower than we used to. The clue is in the cigarette the top cartoon smokes. Today we smoke less, we exercise more, we use more sunscreen and we eat healthier, all allowing our bodies to produce more firm collagen in less damaged skin cells.







  • Tangentially related: Where I grew up (Eastern European country in the communist era), the staple appetiser for dinner was chicken broth with noodles. I loved noodles as a kid os I would always want to eat them last. So, I would always first eat all the broth (although with a spoon rather than drinking it straight from the bowl) pushing the noodles aside, draining all the broth from them to spoon it up, and then eat the noodles. Even now, when I go to Asian restaurants and order some form of noodle soup, I eat it in a similar way.

    But cereal, no. Every spoonful has to contain a balanced proportion of cereal and milk.


  • I work a full time job. 5 days a week, 8h a day. I don’t have many other responsibilities, so it’s not that hard. I would say that gym consumes 2h in one day, including traveling to and from (although my gym is like 1 minute off my route to work) changing before and showering after and that includes 60-75 minute workout. Days when I make plans with friends in the evening are trickier but if I stay disciplined, I make it work. Also, I start work at 7 and leave around 3.30, so I’m home around 6pm after a day of work and gym. And as for being drained after work, my job is mainly thinking (I’m a scientist). I don’t know what you do, but I can imagine having a physically demanding job can indeed discourage from the thought of lifting some dumbbells after a whole day.

    As for motivation, don’t have much more to advise than: you just have to force yourself. I guess sticking with it for a few months and seeing the effects is indirectly motivating. Scientists say that will power itself is like a muscle: the more you exercise it, the more of it you seem to have. Every day is an internal struggle for me, fending off the thought “maybe just today… I can skip gym?” Sometimes I cave, but I do manage to make it 5-6 days a week.
